# FileBastion changelog

The version lives in `VERSION` (one line, `major.minor.patch`) and is stamped into the exe, the MSI and the update
feed from there. Every change session bumps it: a new capability is a minor step, a fix is a patch step, a change
that breaks files or settings is a major step.

## 2.5.0 — 2026-10-13

- **Snip shortcut you can define, Print Screen by default.** While FileBastion is running, Print Screen starts a snip from
anywhere in Windows (also when FileBastion is minimised). In Settings, Snipping, click the Snip key box and press any
combination (Print Screen, F-keys, or Ctrl/Alt/Shift/Win plus a key); the key that stops a recording can be set the same
way. If Print Screen still opens the Windows Snipping Tool, Settings has a button to the Windows option that turns that off.

## 2.4.1 — 2026-10-13

- **Fix: the updater could loop and look like a crash.** If Windows Installer was busy or stuck (error 1618), the old copy
restarted, found the same update, closed again, and so on, and two copies could start two installers at once. The
update step now runs one install at a time, waits until every FileBastion window is gone, retries a busy installer,
stops an install that runs longer than two minutes, keeps one log per attempt (install-VERSION-N.log in the updates
folder under LocalAppData/FileBastion), and when it fails it stops installing by itself and says why in the update bar.
This takes effect for updates started from 2.4.1 on.

## 2.4.0 — 2026-10-13

- **Snip** (everything the Windows Snipping Tool does, inside FileBastion): a Snip button in the toolbar, Ctrl+Shift+S, an
optional global hotkey and `-snip` on the command line. Rectangle, window, full screen and freeform snips on a frozen
copy of the screen (all monitors), delay of 3, 5 or 10 seconds, optional mouse pointer. The picture is saved to
PicturesFileBastionScreenshots, copied to the clipboard and opened as a tab, ready for markup.
- **Screen recording**: record an area, a window or the whole screen to mp4 (or webm / gif) with optional microphone and
computer sound, pause and resume, a small Stop bar that is kept out of the video. The recording opens as a tab.
- **Markup editor** for pictures (Edit / Markup button): pen, pencil, highlighter, eraser, ruler, text, arrow, line,
rectangle, ellipse, blur, step numbers, crop, rotate, flip, resize, undo and redo; copy, save, save as, share, print and
  copy text from the picture.

## 2.3.1 — 2026-10-12

- **Come back where you were**: closing and reopening FileBastion now restores the open files, the active tab, how far each
file was scrolled, the folder, the folders opened in the sidebar and how far the sidebar was scrolled (the read-aloud
  position was already kept).
- **Read aloud**: a dot, ! or ? now ends a sentence only when a space follows it, so numbers like 3.5, versions and
addresses like www.a.com are read as one piece instead of being cut at the dot.

## 2.3.0 — 2026-10-12

- **Convert**: a Convert… button (and Convert… in the sidebar menu) turns files into other formats: documents (docx, odt,
rtf, epub, pdf, html, md, txt, pptx text), data (csv, tsv, json, ndjson, xml, yaml, toml, ini, xlsx, ods, sql),
images (png, jpg, gif, bmp, tiff, webp, ico, svg, qoi, tga, pnm and, with ImageMagick downloaded on first use,
heic, avif, jxl, raw, psd and more), PDF to pictures, pictures to PDF, audio and video (FFmpeg downloaded on first
use), archives (zip, tar, tar.gz, 7z, rar, xz, bz2), subtitles, fonts (ttf, otf, woff, woff2), text encodings,
base64, hex, checksums, contacts, calendars and playlists. Chains are found automatically (for example docx to
PDF), the screen shows the route, what is lost on the way, and what is downloaded the first time. Word, Excel and
PowerPoint files convert exactly when LibreOffice is installed. Originals are never changed.
- **Sidebar**: select several files and folders (Ctrl and Shift click, Ctrl+A), then copy, cut, paste, move, delete (to
the Recycle Bin), rename, zip, share, Properties, Open with, Send to and Convert; right-click gives the same menu and
"More Windows options" opens the real Explorer menu. Drag to a folder moves, with Ctrl copies.
- **Favourites** above Recent: add folders or files by right-click or by dragging them in; drag to reorder.

## 2.2.0 — 2026-10-11

- Read aloud now uses Microsoft Edge's natural voices (about 320, nearly every language including Malayalam, Hindi
and Arabic) through a hidden Edge that starts on demand and ends with the app. Without Edge or without internet it
falls back to the Windows voices, and says so. Choose the engine in the Listen bar or in Settings.
- Click in the text (or select some) and press Listen: reading starts there. While reading, a click jumps to that place.

## 2.1.0 — 2026-10-11

- Read aloud: a Listen button for Markdown, text and Word documents reads the document with the voices of the PC. The
language is detected from the text and a voice for it is chosen (Natural / Online / Neural voices first); the Listen
bar has Pause, previous/next sentence, restart, voice and speed, and the sentence being read is highlighted.
- The place is remembered per document: switch to another tab and come back (or restart the app) and Listen resumes
from where it stopped; the button shows the percentage. Reading speed is also in Settings.
- Sidebar: an up-arrow button shows the parent folder of the folder you are in; at the top of a drive it says so.

## 2.0.0 — 2026-10-11

- DocBastion is now **FileBastion**: it is about any kind of file (viewing, converting, light editing), not just documents.
New name, exe (`filebastion.exe`), install folder, shortcuts, icons, update feed and web page; the settings and
backups of DocBastion are carried over on first start. Uninstall DocBastion first (it is a separate program to Windows).

## 1.9.0 — 2026-10-11

- One Settings screen (the gear): theme, start zoom for documents, sidebar options, software update (version, newest
version, Check now, update button, automatic updates), backups folder, log folder and file, and the file types.
- Zoom buttons and Ctrl+wheel also work on PDFs (the page resets to the first when the zoom changes).
- Log file `%LocalAppData%/DocBastion/logs/docbastion.log`: start and exit of every session, a warning at the next
start when the previous session did not exit cleanly, Go panics and runtime crash output with stacks, failed or
slow calls, script errors of the page, window close and session-end messages, update checks, a minute heartbeat
with memory use. A panic in one call is caught and logged instead of ending the program.
- Starting DocBastion from Explorer now brings the window to the front and gives it the keyboard focus (also when a
  copy is already running).

## 1.8.0 — 2026-10-11

- Zoom buttons (minus, percentage, plus) in the toolbar. Ctrl+wheel and Ctrl +/-/0 now zoom only the open document
(images use their own zoom, PDFs their viewer); the window itself, sidebar and toolbar no longer scale.

## 1.7.1 — 2026-10-11

- The installed copy refreshes its file icons at start, so an update shows the new icons without opening the File types panel.

## 1.7.0 — 2026-10-11

- New DocBastion logo (a document with a castle-wall top edge) for the exe, shortcuts and Add/remove programs.
- Document icons: every file type registered with DocBastion shows its own icon (page, label such as PDF / PNG / JSON,
a picture, note, play or Aa glyph) with a small DocBastion badge in the bottom right corner. Made by
`scripts/make-icons.js`, compiled into the exe, written to `%LocalAppData%/DocBastion/icons` on registration.
Files whose default was set with Open with > Always keep the application icon; choose DocBastion under Settings >
Default apps for the per-type icons.

## 1.6.1 — 2026-10-11

- Image viewer: no more thumbnails of the whole folder (slow). The side panel says how many more images the folder
has and offers Previous / Next; the arrow keys still work.

## 1.6.0 — 2026-10-11

- Software update button in the toolbar: shows the installed version; when a newer one exists it turns into
"Update to x.y.z". Click it for the update panel (installed / newest version, release notes, Check now,
  Update and restart, automatic-update switch).

## 1.5.0 — 2026-10-11

- The sidebar can be resized: drag its right edge wider or narrower (double-click resets it). The width is remembered.

## 1.4.0 — 2026-10-11

- HTML files open like code: the source with line numbers and colours on the left, the page on the right, with a
Source / Split / Preview switch. Pages that build themselves with a script (Vite, React) show blank in the preview,
so the bar says scripts are off and offers Open in browser.

## 1.3.1 — 2026-10-11

- Fix: images opened as a blank page because the hidden update bar pushed the content into a zero-height row.

## 1.3.0 — 2026-10-11

- Image viewer: Previous / Next through the images of the folder, thumbnails and an information panel (size,
dimensions, camera, taken, exposure, GPS with a map link) on the right, fit / 1:1 / zoom / rotate.
- Analyze image: reads the text in a picture with the Windows OCR engine. Web addresses, e-mail addresses, phone
numbers, coordinates and street addresses found in it are links: browser, mail program, phone, Google Maps.
- Automatic updates: at start the app asks app.winbastion.com for the newest version. An installed copy downloads
it, checks its SHA-256 and installs it silently, then restarts; with unsaved changes it waits and offers a button.
- `VERSION` file as the single source of the version number; `scripts\publish.ps1` builds, uploads and announces a
  release on app.winbastion.com.

## 1.2.0 — 2026-10-11

- Code view: code and data files open as two panes, the raw file with line numbers on the left and a
syntax-coloured copy on the right (JSON pretty-printed), with a Raw / Split / Formatted switch. 41 languages.
- The sidebar tree scrolls instead of running off the bottom of the window.

## 1.1.0 — 2026-10-11

- File types panel: choose per extension which files list DocBastion under "Open with"; Select all / none;
a button to the Windows Default apps page. 93 extensions: documents, text and data, code, images, fonts, audio,
video. Fonts, audio and video open in tabs.
- Per-user MSI installer (`scripts\make-installer.ps1`); its last page offers the File types panel; uninstall
  removes the "Open with" entries.
- Ctrl+F4 closes the tab, like Ctrl+W.

## 1.0.0 — 2026-10-11

- DocView becomes DocBastion and joins the WinBastion family. Settings and backups of DocView are carried over.
